Mission Bay Beach Club: Everything You Need to Know

Mission Bay Beach Club, San Diego

The Mission Bay Beach Club is everything you think about when you think about California vibes.

Perched on a hill above Mission Bay Park, the former visitor’s center turned waterfront destination screams surf, sunsets, and San Diego.

The first thing you’ll notice is the unique architecture of a once-defunct and vacated building that has been transformed into a vegan coffee shop, bike rental shop, and beacon for bay-goers looking for a casual-yet-trendy spot to take in the daily sunsets and easy views of the water.

But you’ll stay for the vibes.

The project, which was led by Beaucoup Creative’s Bradley Schnell and Kristine Overacre, opened in late 2021 after years of rehabilitation.

Now, you’ll find chill music pumped through speakers surrounding an elevated patio with market lights overhead and Adirondack chairs on the periphery, providing a certain whimsical flair.

At the cafe, you’ll find its namesake Superbloom coffee, juices, vegan fare (including pre-packaged salads, and a few hot items like a massive pretzel), and ice cream sandwiches from their ice cream cart (summer only, I believe).

I’ve been told, they’re working on a liquor license so they can open a full bar, but it has yet to materialize. Can you imagine sipping a refreshing mule while leaning back in an Adirondack watching the sunset? I do, almost every time I visit.

Next door is Beach Bunny, a gift shop and rental facility with cruiser bikes you can take along the waterfront bike path to the various beaches, parks, and nearby Mission Bay Resort (one of my favorites) that flank East Mission Bay Drive.

Around the grounds are a bocce ball court (you can rent equipment at the Club), a vineyard, and plenty of seating.

One of my favorite things about Mission Bay Beach Club is its proximity to A) loads of parking and B) one of Mission Bay Park’s many playgrounds. Right on the water, it’s a fantastic (though slightly aging) spot to exercise the kiddo while taking in the breeze from the Bay with Superbloom coffee or lemonade in hand.
